Explore a Modern Workspace Complete with floating jungle

We recently sat down with downtown Phoenix-based interior design firm Mackenzie Collier Interiors (MCI) to learn more about their approach to designing with plants. MCI's portfolio spans a wide range of settings, including private homes, multi-family buildings, offices, restaurants, retail spaces, and wellness facilities. They excel particularly in projects involving mixed-use and repurposed spaces, showcasing their versatility and expertise. MCI is known for their creative, inclusive, and sustainable approach to design.

Here at Vert Plantworks, we were drawn to explore MCI’s approach to plant design by their unique greenery-filled office in the McKinley Club, a chic co-working collective. Founder Mackenzie Collierexplained, "As we were helping design McKinley Club, we had initially picked a space at the other front side. However, no one wanted this particular space because it had a giant electrical platform in it, seen as a barrier. But I saw the opportunity and said, 'Actually, I want it because we're gonna make it a plant stand.' That was the whole inspiration for the space, based around the plants. We wanted something that would make people stop and say, 'Hey, what is this?'". Over the years, the plant stand has grown and blossomed, achieving its intended effect. Mackenzie emphasized that incorporating plants into their designs is vital as it brings spaces to life, making them more welcoming and healthier. Additionally, plants offer a range of benefits, including enhancing the aesthetics of a space and providing solutions to design challenges. Nature often serves as inspiration, with Mackenzie mentioning that she turns to hiking for ideas when faced with interior design concepts.

From the perspective of MCI's designer Yoselin, incorporating plants into their designs goes beyond aesthetics: "Plants bring natural beauty and they just bring freshness into any space. I mean, they come in so many colors, mostly green, but you can see that there's so much texture and variation in hues." They also play a functional role, adding volume and filling in dead corners or large walls. But it doesn't stop there. The designer also touched on the health benefits of plants, "They're natural air purifiers, so...they make the space healthier," she shared. Aside from the functional and health aspects, the designer provided some personal insights and expertise. When asked about tips for using plants in designs, she replied, "The most important thing that you should consider is the size. If you're playing around with high ceilings, you wanna make sure that you get a really tall plant...because they will really grow into the space." She also highlighted the importance of considering the design style, suggesting that for mid-century designs, more subtle plants work best. The conversation also touched on the evolving design trends related to plants. The designer mentioned the shift from filling spaces with numerous plants to favoring a statement plant as a focal point. She compared it to artwork, where one big piece can have a greater impact than multiple smaller ones.

We spoke with team member Erica, who also takes care of the plants, to get her take on how impactful the green space has been for her. Coming from a corporate environment with gray walls and desks, she described the transition as stepping into the "MCI Jungle." Erica shared, "It honestly puts a smile on my face walking in. It's a nice little task to break up the monotony of the week and it kind of gets your brain flowing” As the primary caregiver for the plants, Erica diligently tends to their needs. She waters them once a week, following a consistent schedule for all the plants. Along with watering, she engages with them, picking out unnecessary leaves, and giving them the attention they require. You can really see Erica's excitement towards being around the plants. She even jokingly mentioned the idea of having a desk set up in their midst.

MCI has truly created an exceptional office environment where the importance of plants is not only acknowledged but celebrated.Their unique approach exemplifies the growing trend of integrating nature into the modern workplace, recognizing the significant role plants play in creating welcoming, healthier, and more inspiring environments. All starting with Mackenzie's visionary decision to transform an electrical platform into a captivating plant stand. The MCI approach to incorporating greenery into our workspaces is not merely a decorative choice, but a strategic investment in physical and mental well-being.
